 (273543355)

It had rained all day, but 6584 hardy fans still made it out to Caja Mágica de Usera. Atletico started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. Lineup: Cardelli - Campanile, Alba, Nirschl - Delamarre, González, Baetsen, Daiche, Mateos - Dahle, Aleksandrowski.

A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for socceroos. They fielded: Alcazaba - Miholič, Jones, Pompei - Fois, Moreau, Sudić, Gazitúa, Johansson - Meurant, Schneider.

Atletico took a creative approach on the field. After 2 minutes, socceroos put themselves up by 0 - 1, as Morris Jones finished off a strike from the left with a real cannon placed at the far post. Nemesio Gazitúa was, after 19 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors' lead with a well placed diving header after the ball had looped into the centre, but home side's keeper Paolo Cardelli made the save. A series of fine plays up the middle should have led to a goal for Atletico, but Reodor Dahle's shot went over the bar. Jeff Meurantshowed great fighting spirit and didn't seem to mind the rain at all. With 33 minutes played, socceroos's Cene Miholič fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee booked Cene Miholič for diving. After 34 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for Jeff Meurant who increased socceroos's lead to 0 - 2. It was 0 - 2 at the break. socceroos held the ball, with a clear 61 percent of possession.

Atletico needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 46 minutes Reodor Dahle made way for Manuel Lalanda. Some things can only be learned through experience, and Cene Miholič should take his lesson to heart after nearly giving Atletico a goal with 56 minutes of the match played. Atletico's Giancarlo Campanile managed a superb strike from the left after 62 minutes that would have left goalkeeper Saúl Alcazaba without a chance, had it not hit the post. socceroos's Nicolas Moreau wanted to play on, but 71 minutes into the game the decision was made to substitute him for Aapo Suokko. The socceroos players could smell victory in the air. Cene Miholič wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for Luca Fetto after 74 minutes. As Jeff Meurant was substituted 74 minutes into the game, he could take comfort in the fact that his team was in the lead. Artur Pfaffenzeller was the replacement. Artur Pfaffenzeller increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley shot away on a pass from the right. 0 - 3. By now, socceroos were drawing the troops back in order to defend their lead. The visitors' Artur Pfaffenzeller took advantage of an error due to a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and central backs 78 minutes into the match. 0 - 4 for socceroos. Jerko Daničić was called on to replace Atletico's Elroy Baetsen after 81 minutes following a nasty collision. At 82 minutes into the game, Atletico's Jerko Daničić deftly knocked the ball home after an impressive run down the left, reducing the visitors' lead to 1 - 4. socceroos enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 61 percent of possession.

The most dominating Atletico player was without a doubt Adam Aleksandrowski. Jerko Daničić was a disappointment, however. socceroos's top performer was clearly Roman Schneider. Luca Fetto on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 1 - 4.
